Lucille Transtrum – Artist Statement
My art invites you in, not to tell you what to think, but to start a conversation. What does this piece mean to you?
My progression in fused glass began four years ago and has grown into something far more intuitive. I cut, grind, paint, and layer glass, then surrender it to a kiln at 1,400 degrees and let the heat do its magic. The surprise of what emerges is what keeps me coming back.
Some pieces are rooted in the heritage of my father, who was Pascua Yaqui Indian, and my mother, who is Slavic, and my childhood memories. Others are purely about feeling joy, curiosity, and play. As a silversmith, I weave metal into my glass work, bridging two crafts that feel like different sides of the same self.
What began as my own creative journey has quietly grown into something larger. I have passed down crochet and embroidery to my grandchildren, and now fused glass is becoming part of their story, too. Now I am teaching my grandchildren fused glass. That progression, from my hands to theirs, may be the most meaningful work I have ever done.
