Mitch Bedke

About the Artist

Mitch grew up in San Diego and was the son of an accomplished painter and artist. He was exposed to a great many media while growing up.  After finishing up at the U of U, he worked in his father’s advertising agency as a graphic designer, giving him more freedom of creativity.

He then settled in Park City in the late 80’s. Raising his two boys in this Mountain Town, they enjoy all it has to offer. In 2010, he took a glass fusing class at the Kimball Art Center and that sparked his interest and career in kiln-formed glass. He’s also completed a 3-week residency at the Pilchuck Glass School in 2022. Kiln-formed glass encompasses many techniques of glass art, including fusing, slumping, painting with enamels and kiln casting.

He focuses on glass casting large sculptures, which is his main passion. Glass is a spectacular medium for color and when light shines through, it radiates.

When Mitch is not in the studio, he is out enjoying nature—exploring Utah’s vast backcountry, which provides the inspiration for his work.  In addition to kiln-formed glass, he works with stained glass, glass blowing and cold work.

Other media he works in are: carving Linocut blocks for prints, welding, blacksmithing, painting and photography.

One of Mitch’s favorite quotes is: “Everyone is an artist; you just haven’t found your medium.”
